Frankfurt – AFP
The German authorities announced Thursday that the total number of Covid-19 victims in the country has exceeded 100,000 since the pandemic began, noting that the past 24 hours alone have recorded 351 deaths from the disease.
And the Federal Health Authority said that the total number of victims of the pandemic specifically amounted to 100,119 deaths, while the country recorded within 24 hours a record number of new infections with the virus, which amounted to 75,961 cases.
The first economic power in Europe fears that its hospitals will reach their maximum capacity if the epidemiological curve continues its current upward path.
The weekly infection rate reached 419.7 new infections per 100,000 people, which is a record high.
Germany, especially its southern and eastern regions, was hit hard by a new wave of the epidemic that experts and politicians attribute to the low vaccination rate (68 percent), which is among the lowest in Western Europe.
Gerno Marx, president of the German Association of Intensive Care Medicine, warned Monday that hospitals in some regions of the country were already facing an “excess burden”, which required transferring patients to other hospitals.
And several German regions have re-imposed strict restrictions in an attempt to stop this fourth and most powerful epidemic wave since the emergence of the virus.
