The Moroccan authorities decided to suspend flights for travelers to and from France, starting from Friday, indefinitely, due to the “deteriorating epidemiological situation” related to the Covid-19 pandemic in some European countries, according to the official news agency reported Thursday.
The agency said that a specialized ministerial committee took this decision, which will enter into force at 22:59 GMT Friday night, “to confront the deterioration of the epidemiological situation in some European neighboring countries”, in addition to “preserving the gains that Morocco has accrued in the management of the Covid-19 pandemic.” 19″.
And France, where the epidemic killed more than 118,000 people, announced Thursday the strengthening of health restrictions, but without quarantine measures or a curfew.
This country includes the most important Moroccan community residing abroad, with more than one million people, and is a major source of foreign tourists who usually come to the Kingdom. It is also the most important economic partner of Morocco.
Europe again became the global epicenter of the epidemic this fall, while the highly contagious delta mutant reduced the effectiveness of vaccines against transmission by up to 40 percent, according to the World Health Organization.
In mid-November, Morocco announced strengthening its border controls to address Covid-19, with new measures that include preventing entry to arrivals from mostly European countries if they were found to be infected with the virus at the Kingdom’s airports and ports, unless they were residing there.
These measures include countries classified as “list B”, that is, experiencing an alarming epidemiological situation, according to the classification of the Moroccan authorities, and also several Arab and African countries.
The daily toll of HIV infections and deaths from it witnessed a noticeable decline in Morocco in recent weeks, with the continuation of the vaccination campaign, which included more than 22 million and 600 thousand people who benefited from the two doses of the vaccine, according to the latest official toll.
On the other hand, the vaccination permit continues as a necessary condition for traveling abroad or entering all closed public spaces and facilities.
Morocco aspires to reach mass immunity by vaccinating 80 percent of its population of about 36 million.
The number of people infected with the virus since its appearance in Morocco has reached about 950,000, of whom 14,770 have died, according to the latest official toll.
