Burning books depicting the Prophet Muhammad in Syria
A book distributed by the Turkish Ministry of Education on Thursday to schools in northern Syria containing graphic drawings of the Prophet Muhammad angered residents and activists who saw religious insults in it.
Agence France-Presse indicated that religious books for the first grade of primary school were distributed in several schools under the control of the Turkish forces and their loyal factions in northern Syria, including the border city of Jarabulus, where residents quickly burned the books.
A resident of the city told AFP: “We were surprised in the morning by the presence of books (…) containing pictures of the Prophet, which we are not satisfied with,” noting that activists and residents communicated with each other and “books were collected and burned” in the city center. .
The official of education in the city of al-Bab, Juma Kazkaz, said that “a search is underway with the Directorate of Education in Gaziantep and the Turkish advisor in the region in order to amend the curriculum,” noting that the education departments in the local councils “belong to the nearby Turkish states such as Gaziantep, Kilis and Şanlıurfa. that sends books and publications.
According to Agence France-Presse, there are calls for demonstrations in several areas, including the city of Al-Bab, if the distribution of books is not prevented or they are withdrawn from circulation.
