A Dutch judge on Wednesday ordered the imprisonment of two people who threw stones at police during demonstrations in the city of Rotterdam, in the first ruling of its kind after violence in several Dutch cities protesting the restrictions imposed by the government to limit the spread of Covid-19.

A 26-year-old woman identified as “Sharon Am” and a 29-year-old man, Terence van den, were sentenced to five months in prison, including a two-month suspended sentence. Sharon was fined 1,000 euros for causing damage to police cars, and both were banned from entering the Coolsingle business district for a year under the speedy ruling.

Judge C. H Van Prevoort de Bruyne during her verdict against Terence van den “I stood there throwing stones at the police. We saw the footage together,” adding, “I didn’t see a situation, you had to defend yourself against anything.”

“This discussion is not over yet, and so are these disturbances, and so are your problems,” the judge added.

Violent riots erupted in the coastal city on Friday night to protest against COVID-19 restrictions, during which five people were injured by police bullets. The unrest spread Saturday to the city of The Hague, where demonstrators threw fireworks and stones at the police, and later to other cities, including Groningen in the north, on Sunday and Monday.

At least 173 people were arrested across the country.

The Covid restrictions announced on November 13 included the closure of bars, restaurants, cafes and stores at 8 pm, and the holding of sports matches without an audience.

The Dutch government is considering announcing more strict measures on Friday, after new infections with the Corona virus recorded a new record, reaching 23,789 cases in one day.
