Elements of security in Haiti

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Tuesday that his country will do “everything it can” to free missionaries and their family members kidnapped in Haiti.

“Our focus in the administration is entirely on this,” Blinken added during a press conference in the Ecuadorean capital, Quito, at dawn on Wednesday.

He pointed out that a team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation “FBI” was engaged in this case, and employees of the US State Department were sent to Haiti to follow up on the situation.

He added that the American side is in constant contact with the Haitian police and government, pledging: “We will do everything we can to help resolve the situation.”

“Unfortunately, this also presents a much larger problem of the security situation that is simply unsustainable, with gangs controlling many parts of Port-au-Prince and all of Haiti,” he added.

And the media had previously reported last week, quoting security officials in Haiti, that gang members had kidnapped 17 people, including Christian missionaries and members of their families, in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

On Sunday, the American Christian Aid Group confirmed the kidnapping of 17 people belonging to it, including 16 Americans and one Canadian, in Haiti, explaining that a group of 5 men, 7 women and 5 children was kidnapped during a visit to an orphanage on Saturday.

Security sources in Port-au-Prince confirmed to Agence France-Presse that the kidnappers of these people belong to the “400 Mozo” gang and are demanding a ransom of $17 million for their release.
