The Iranian army launched major military exercises near the borders of Azerbaijan, against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the two neighbors.
The maneuvers, called “Fateh Khyber”, were launched in northwestern Iran with the participation of ground and air forces, including a rapid intervention brigade, armored and artillery units, drones and electronic warfare tools, with fire support from helicopters, and included the implementation of a landing operation in an area after reconnaissance from the air.
At the beginning of the maneuvers, the commander of the ground force of the Iranian army, Brigadier General Kiomars Heydari, warned that elements of the “ISIS” organization were brought to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict (to help Azerbaijan) during the last round of the conflict between the two Azerbaijani sides. And the Armenian is there, pointing out that Tehran is not sure that these people will leave the region.
He explained that the current maneuvers are becoming increasingly important in light of the “overt and hidden” Israeli presence and the “remarkable presence of ISIS terrorists” in the region, adding: “We will not be the ones to start the war, but we will not tolerate the presence of suspicious elements at our borders.” He pointed out that during the maneuvers, the Iranian army will reveal for the first time new drones capable of accurately hitting targets at long distances, in addition to testing two models of a new anti-armor weapon.
