An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit areas in southwestern Iran at dawn on Friday, according to the local seismological observatory and the American Geological Survey, injuring three people, according to the Iranian official media.
The earthquake occurred at 4:45 pm local time (1:15 am GMT), at a depth of about 10 km near the city of Gnawa in Bushehr province. The institute said that the earthquake was followed by aftershocks, one of which was recorded about two hours later and had a magnitude of 4.6.
The official Iranian news agency, IRNA, reported that the earthquake did not cause significant material damage, but injured three people, quoting local officials. Iran lies on several major tectonic plates and is subject to frequent seismic activity.
