A fire broke out on Friday in the intensive care unit of a hospital for patients with the “Covid-19” epidemic in Romania, killing nine people, in the third such fire causing casualties in less than a year, officials said.
Firefighters managed to put out the blaze at the hospital in the eastern city of Constana at about 07:55 GMT, using additional teams from nearby areas. Video footage showed patients jumping out of windows in the hospital’s basements, while firefighters carried people out of the building. Interim Health Minister Sheki Attila said 113 patients were being treated in hospital at the time of the fire, including 10 in the intensive care unit.
Emergency teams have set up a mobile treatment unit near the hospital, and so far 50 patients have been rescued and transferred to other hospitals.
As of Thursday, more than 12,100 people infected with “Corona” were being treated in Romanian hospitals, including 315 children. This number includes 1,364 patients in intensive care units.
