Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today, Friday, his country’s support for the decision to start the procedures for admitting the Republic of Iran to membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Moscow – Sputnik. Speaking via video link at the summit meeting of the SCO countries, the Russian President said: “We all attach great importance to issues of cooperation between the SCO and those countries that seek to establish an open and full dialogue with our organization and are considering the possibility of joining its work. In this context, Russia supports the resolution Submitted for approval by the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to start the procedure for admission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
“We have always defended the full participation of Iran in the work of our organization, based on the fact that this country plays an important role in the Eurasia region and has been cooperating fruitfully with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization for a long time,” Putin added.
According to President Putin, Iran’s accession will undoubtedly contribute to further strengthening the international standing of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
And of course, we welcome granting the status of dialogue partner to Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Russia is a supporter of the active involvement of these countries in various aspects of the activities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Of course, considering a fairly strong set of requests from other countries willing to cooperate With our organization in one way or another requires great care.”
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was founded, in 2001, by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have observer status; Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka are partner countries.
