Sprinter Coila Nidriya Pereira Semedo of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) was waiting for a surprise at the finish line despite losing a race at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
After participating in the 200-meter race for the “T11” class (visual impairment), Quella Nidria Pereira Semedo was surprised by her guide and partner Manuel Antonio Vaz da Vega, as he kneeled on the track on his knees, holding her hand, asking to marry her, amid the applause of the audience.
“I don’t have words to explain how I feel, this was my first Paralympic Games and as I got older I was thinking about leaving it later, but now I have the extra motivation to keep going, we’re always together,” Coyla commented.
As for Manuel, he said, “I thought it was the best time and the best place to do it. Athletics is my second home. I’ve been competing since 2005, we’ve been in a relationship for 11 years, and I thought it was time to make a proposal, so why not do it?” .
