The head of the Kaliningrad Football Association, Alexander Gvardis, was quoted by the media as saying that the death of goalkeeper Alexander Shishmarev may have been caused by asphyxiation after suffering an injury during Saturday’s match.
Gvardis said in a statement to the newspaper “Sport Express”: “Shishmarev tried to intercept the ball and collided with a player from the opposing team, which led to him falling unsuccessfully to the ground. According to preliminary data, he was swallowed by the tongue and choked. It certainly wasn’t a traumatic brain injury.”
The official added that an ambulance arrived at the site within 15-25 minutes after being called, but doctors’ efforts to rescue the player were unsuccessful.
