High cholesterol usually does not cause any obvious symptoms, unless the levels are very high, so a blood test is needed to determine if you are at risk for several health conditions.

In most cases, patients are made aware of their “total” cholesterol levels.

Total cholesterol takes into account the amount of “bad” and “good” cholesterol in the blood. The health score should show a total cholesterol level of five or less.

And if not, it’s time to make some lifestyle changes to help lower your cholesterol levels.

Dr Susan Steinbaum, a cardiologist, said laughter is like medicine, it helps increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

The good cholesterol helps capture the bad cholesterol in the bloodstream and transport it to the liver where it can be broken down.

This can be as simple as putting on a funny movie, watching silly videos online, or laughing with your loved one.

Another useful way to help lower your cholesterol levels quickly is to get moving.

Dr. Sarah Samaan, another cardiologist, said exercise can “raise HDL (“good cholesterol”) and improve LDL (“bad cholesterol”).

The more exercise you do per day, the faster your cholesterol levels will drop, thus improving your health.

Another tip is to add spices to your food, especially black pepper, coriander and ginger.

Other spices recommended by WebMD to help lower cholesterol levels include:

• the Garlic.

• Curcumin.

• Ginger.

• Cinnamon.

“Research shows that eating half to one clove of garlic each day can lower cholesterol by up to nine percent,” WebMD stated.

Steinbaum added that adding some spices to your food is a great way to help reduce appetite.
