One small sock can cause damage not only to the washing machine, but also to a much simpler appliance, like a tumble dryer. The cost of repair can become unaffordable, forcing you to purchase a new device – an expense that can certainly be avoided.
In the previous article, we addressed the damage that can be done to the washing machine from tiny clothing specifications. In this article, we will address dryer malfunctions and what is important to know before hiring a technician.
All you have to do is wash the small items in a mesh basket, and transfer the basket directly from the washing machine to the dryer, with the socks and underwear still inside.
In addition, when finishing, be sure to remove the filter for cleaning, only after emptying the tumble dryer of all clothes.
“Between runs, it’s important to clean the filter of the dryer from the batter that is released from the laundry during drying,” explains Tomer Besson, a washing machine technician at the “Professionals” website.
“It is important not to open the filter while the machine is running, as this can cause the drum to jam, and the drum strips to rupture.”
When will the repair of the dryer not pay off?
Besson: “If the tumble dryer is old and the drum strap is badly damaged, it is not worth investing in replacing the strap. A tumble dryer is not a particularly complicated device, unlike a washing machine, and it should last 10 years easily, with proper use and maintenance.”
“The rule of thumb should be whether the repair exceeds half a degree of a new product,” the service center of the “Professionals” website notes. “If so, the repair is not profitable. It is now possible to purchase a tumble dryer for NIS 1,200-1,400 from a well-known brand.
“Replacing a heating element in a tumble dryer costs NIS 450-650. Replacing a digital command card for a tumble dryer costs NIS 600-800, depending on the model. Therefore, the repair is not always economical. It all depends on the model, the cost of the defective component and the number of years it is used.”
The reason: “This malfunction is caused because many consumers clean the filter at the end of the drying operation, while the clothes are still inside the dryer drum,” Besson details. “Then, a small sock or panties fall towards the hole of the filter. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly empty the drum of clothes before removing the filter for cleaning.”
The damage: “When a sock gets stuck in a blower, whose job it is to disperse the hot air inside the dryer, there are two options: one, the drum just won’t turn, and the clothes won’t be able to dry,” Besson explains. “In this case, all you have to do is pull out the jammed sock, which has a technician visit fee. The second option is that the jammed sock can cause the drum to resist rotation, until the drum strip falls or tears.”
Besson: “In a regular dryer, there is a threaded hose, which makes it very easy to remove the stuck sock. In a condenser with a condenser, the machine has to be disassembled for the purpose of pulling out the sock. This micromanages the repair cost by about NIS 100.”
“If it is only a matter of removing the sock, and no damage is caused to the other components, this is a repair that amounts to a visit fee (NIS 200-250),” the service center notes.
“If the sock is stuck in a condenser-type dryer, the repair cost is NIS 300-350. If the strip has fallen off, the cost of returning it is about NIS 250 for a regular dryer, and about NIS 350 for a condenser-type dryer.
“If the drum strap is torn, the cost of replacing it is NIS 350-400, including the price of the strap. Note that a rubber band is a very cheap component, so if you are offered a rubber band in a high amount, claiming that it is a special model, do not agree.”
