The appearance of Sheikh Adel Al-Kalbani, the former imam of the Grand Mosque, with a promotional announcement for the Riyadh season, whose activities continue in the Saudi capital, sparked widespread controversy on social networking sites in the Kingdom.
Al-Kalbani appeared in a military uniform as he led a battle in a promotional clip for the famous virtual game “Field Combat”, which will be one of the activities of the Riyadh season.
This event includes a number of shooting simulation games with techniques inspired by real gun shooting training practices.
In addition to Al-Kalbani, some football stars and artists appeared, such as Muhammad Al-Deayea, Saeed Al-Owairan, Khaled Abdel Rahman, and astronomy expert Khaled Al-Zaqaq.
The head of the Entertainment Authority, Turki Al-Sheikh, published the clip on his Twitter account, and within hours, the promotional clip achieved nearly 5 million views.
Al-Kalbani jokingly commented on the video: “Do you think I can go to Hollywood?”
With the spread of the promotional clip, Al-Kalbani’s name topped the list of the most popular topics on Twitter in the Kingdom.
And soon the matter turned into a heated debate between Al-Kalbani and his followers, who number about 6.5 million followers on Twitter.
Al-Kalbani was attacked by tweeters who accused him of “transforming from an imam of the sanctuary to a clown and an actor.”
Some accused al-Kalbani of “supporting the people of falsehood and spreading corruption.”
Others saw that what al-Kalbani was doing “contravenes the orders of God and His Messenger.”
Tweeters mocked Al-Kalbani’s participation in the promotional clip, expecting “the participation of the Council of Senior Scholars in the upcoming Riyadh season.”
Some asked: “Is it appropriate for a former imam of the Meccan sanctuary to appear in this view when al-Kalbani is supposed to be a role model?”
Sheikh Al-Kalbani replied
The negative responses and accusations prompted Al-Kalbani to respond to them himself via Twitter, asking: “Shooting is a violation of the order of God and His Messenger?”
Many defended the former imam of the Great Mosque of Mecca, denouncing what they described as the “explained campaign against which he is being exposed.”
Some considered that Adel Al-Kalbani’s shot in the Riyadh season is “a propaganda material and contains many famous people on the communication sites, and it is a natural and not strange shot.”
Others were interested in the idea of advertising and the “creative” method of production, as they said.
