The Bribery Risk Index issued by the TRACE Foundation confirmed that all Gulf countries have witnessed an increase in the rate of commercial bribery risks during the period from 2020 to 2021.

According to the Foundation’s website, the UAE ranked first in the Gulf and 54th globally in the risk of commercial bribery.

The index enumerated the ranking of the Gulf countries after the UAE, where Kuwait ranked second, while it ranked 95th globally, down 12 places, from 83rd last year.

Oman came third after the UAE and Kuwait, and 114th globally, followed by Saudi Arabia in fourth place, then 121st globally, then Qatar fifth at the Gulf level, and 123rd globally, then Bahrain, sixth, and 138th globally.

The index emphasized that North Korea, Turkmenistan, Venezuela and Eritrea pose the highest risks of commercial bribery, while Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and New Zealand represent the lowest.

According to the website of the International Foundation, the index is based on a set of criteria related to combating bribery in the field of business and trade, to measure its risks in nearly 194 countries worldwide.

It shows that the overall country risk score is a weighted sum of four areas: business interactions with government; deterring and enforcing anti-bribery; government and civil service transparency; and the ability to monitor civil society, including the role of the media.

The domain scores are derived from nine sub-domains, and the TRIS matrix was originally developed in 2014 in collaboration with the RAND Corporation, where it is updated annually.
