France international defender Lucas Hernandez has avoided a six-month prison sentence for not complying with an expulsion measure after domestic violence, after a Spanish court accepted his appeal on Wednesday. “We consider that the appeal must be accepted and that the execution of the sentence of deprivation of liberty issued against Lucas François François Bernard Hernandez must be suspended,” the Madrid Supreme Court of Justice said in a statement on the eve of the deadline for the player’s voluntary entry into prison. It added that the suspension of the penalty was still conditional on the player, who will have to pay a fine of 96,000 euros, not committing a “new misdemeanour” within a four-year period. The case dates back to February 3, 2017, when the 21-year-old player, who was not a world champion with his country at the time, quarreled with his partner Amelia Llorente, and they exchanged blows and scratches in front of their home in Madrid at dawn. Llorente hit and scratched him before scratching his car with a key, while the player hit her on her ribs, back, jaw and lips. Hernandez and Llorente were convicted at the end of February 2017 with the same punishment by a Madrid court for “domestic violence”, which is 31 days of community service accompanied by a six-month ban on getting close to each other at a distance of less than 500 meters. After they reconciled, they married a few months later and upon their return from their honeymoon from the United States, the player was arrested at Madrid airport for violating the removal procedure imposed on him. The same procedure was not applied to Llorente because she was not officially notified of this ban on communication and proximity between them, and therefore was not seen as violating the ruling.

After being detained for a few hours, Hernandez, who was playing for Atlético de Madrid, was sentenced in 2019 to six months in prison, and he appealed the verdict to avoid punishment, but his request was rejected in the middle of this month before the Spanish judiciary appealed today, Wednesday.
