German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz plans to switch to using less powerful batteries in the first classes of its electric cars to contain the increase in the prices of some metals. Automotive News quoted Ola Kallenius, CEO of the German company, on auto topics, as saying that his company will use lithium iron phosphate batteries in the new generation of its electric cars, such as EQA and EQB during 2024 and 2025.

This type of battery does not require the more expensive nickel-metal that increases the range of the electric vehicle and is used in models such as the EQS, the all-electric version of its popular S-Class. He is betting that customers will accept less range for their electric vehicles in return for paying a lower price with higher prices for base metals.

“We think there will be a lot of urban customers who don’t need the E63 AMG,” he said, referring to Mercedes’ high-performance sedans. “For those with lower levels, we are looking at offering them electric cars powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries in the future,” he added. It is noteworthy that Mercedes is investing 40 billion euros to produce a wide range of electric cars during the current decade. The company plans to produce electric cars on a 3-body basis from 2025, and it also establishes 8 battery factories with its partners around the world.
