The Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, concluded with great success its first participation in the 73rd edition of the Frankfurt International Book Fair, which was held under the slogan “Re-Meet” over five days from 20 to 24 October, and welcomed its visitors this year after The last session was limited to virtual events.

The participation of the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language in the exhibition included a series of distinguished events, in addition to the conclusion of a number of important cooperation agreements, including the signing of an agreement with the University of Leipzig, the second oldest university in Germany, with the aim of exchanging experiences in the cultural and linguistic fields, and publishing research projects. On Arabic language and literature, and issuing scientific reports on the state of the Arabic language.

The agreement allows the two parties to benefit from the sharing of expertise and research and academic capabilities between them, and to contribute to joint projects to provide a fertile environment for the presence of the Arabic language among students and young researchers, and to consolidate its position as a language of creativity, and to enrich the Arab knowledge and scientific content.

The Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language also organized a number of special events, including the eighth session of the Abu Dhabi Translation Conference, which was held on the sidelines of the exhibition in partnership with the Leibniz Institute for European History under the title “Arabic Language and Civilizational Communication: Literary Translation and the Impact of the Specifics of Culture and History on Translation”. In addition to a series of book signatures in the center’s suite.

His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Tamim, President of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center and Secretary-General of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, said: “The participation of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center in the Frankfurt International Book Fair for the first time reflects our keenness on a qualitative and effective presence in regional and international cultural forums. The exhibition provided us with opportunities Promising, which resulted in the signing of a strategic agreement with the prestigious “Leipzig University”, as part of our efforts towards achieving the center’s objectives aimed at spreading the Arabic language and enhancing its global position as a language of science, culture and creativity. on its projects and programs, and building new partnerships with major cultural institutions to benefit from global expertise and knowledge in various fields.

The center presented its latest publications within the “Kalima” translation project, especially books translated from German literature, and concluded more bilateral agreements to purchase copyrights with international publishing houses to translate their publications from English, French, German, Spanish and other languages.
Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Director of Creative Content Department at the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center, said: “The Frankfurt International Book Fair is an important annual event, as it is one of the largest global cultural events concerned with the book and publishing industry. The fair represents a distinguished platform for strengthening bilateral cooperation and partnerships.”
In turn, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award participated in the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center with a special platform within the center’s pavilion, in which it presented three dialogue sessions that included the most prominent topics that attract the attention of authors and publishers. The first is entitled “Arabic Literature No Limits to Creativity” and examined the reasons that prevent the translation of the works of many great Arab writers and their access to the world.

The second session, “Publishing Arabic Books: Opportunities and Challenges” dealt with the reasons that hinder the entry of works of Arabic literature to Western markets, what are the titles and topics that interest international readers and achieve good sales, and how to support the dissemination of Arabic literature abroad. The third session, “The Child’s Book between Simplifying the Narrative and Complicating the Idea,” discussed the importance of developing the skills of specialists in writing children’s literary works.
