The Embassy of Brazil in Cairo, in partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, is holding a photo exhibition under the title “Return to Egypt… A Brazilian Collection of Photographs”, which includes a number of photographs of Egypt in the nineteenth century, in addition to a collection of photographs of the Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II who ruled Brazil from 1831 to 1889 and was the first head of state from the Americas to visit Egypt, the first time in 1871 and again in 1876.

The exhibition “Back to Egypt.. A Brazilian Collection of Photographs” will be held from November 3 to 30, 2021, at the Gezira Art Center in Zamalek, and this year 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of the first visit of Emperor Dom Pedro II to Egypt.

During his travels he collected more than 500 photographs of Egypt, part of a collection of more than 20,000 photographs preserved by the National Library Foundation in Rio de Janeiro and recognized as the Memory of the World Register by UNESCO, and during his travels within Egypt, from Alexandria to Abu Simbel and Wadi Halfa (present-day Sudan), the Brazilian emperor kept diaries in which he recorded everything he experienced. These diaries, which were recently recognized by UNESCO, will be part of the exhibition, along with more than 90 high-resolution prints of the original images reflecting ancient Egyptian sites and landscapes.
