German Jennifer Fenech was facing a life sentence for war crimes and murder, in the first official judicial procedure in the world in connection with the practices committed by ISIS against the Yazidis in northern Iraq.

Fenech explained that she went to Iraq to join her “brothers” during her trial, which began in April 2019.

In the summer of 2015, she and her then-husband, Taha al-Jumaili, who is currently being tried in Frankfurt on similar charges, bought a five-year-old girl and her mother from captives of the Yazidi minority in order to enslave them, according to the prosecution.

After various forms of torture, the husband punished the girl for urinating on her bed, and tied her to a window outside the house where she was kept with her mother, in a temperature of fifty degrees Celsius. The girl died of thirst while the mother forced Nora to remain in the service of the couple. Fenech, who is accused of not interfering to stop her partner from doing so, said she was “afraid” he would “lock her up”.

Fenech had defended herself during one of the recent hearings, saying, “They want to make an example of me for everything that happened under the Islamic State. It’s hard to imagine that this is possible in the rule of law,” according to the newspaper “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
