The Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, announced the signing of an agreement with the University of Leipzig, the second oldest university in Germany. This comes within the framework of his efforts to establish partnerships with leading local, regional and international bodies, in an effort to advance the Arabic language scientifically, educationally, culturally and creatively.

The agreement was signed by the President of the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, Dr. Ali bin Tamim, and the Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies and Professor of Arabic Language and Translation Sciences, Professor Sebastian Maisel, in the presence of the UAE Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany Hafsa Abdullah Muhammad Sharif Al Ulama, and Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Director of Creative Content Department at the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language.

Dr. Ali bin Tamim, President of the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, said: “We at the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language are proud of our new global partnership with the University of Leipzig, which is one of the most prestigious universities in Germany, with a long history and deep experience in the study and teaching of the Arabic language. We are pleased to sign this agreement with her, which enhances our efforts to enhance the presence of the Arabic language and its use globally as a language, knowledge, culture and creativity, and to enhance its use as a common language, especially in Germany and Europe. This agreement is also one of the many partnership agreements we signed and intend to sign in order to achieve the center’s strategy and objectives for the advancement of the Arabic language at various levels, through joint cooperation with major institutions and benefiting from global expertise and knowledge.”

This agreement aims to define the general framework and basic principles of partnership, coordinate joint efforts between the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language and the University of Leipzig, and strengthen cooperation relations between the two parties to support efforts to develop Arabic language teaching and learning, cooperate in its research, and organize activities and conferences to expand its spread. It also allows both parties to benefit from the scientific, academic and practical experiences of the two institutions in order to support the achievement of their goals and strategies.

The UAE’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Hafsa Abdullah Mohammed Sharif Al Olama, said: “The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center has a long record of partnerships with the most prominent authorities at the local and international levels, and this partnership with Leipzig University confirms the depth of bilateral relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Federal Republic of Germany. Especially with regard to cultural exchange and civilization. Undoubtedly, the constructive cooperation here represents an important station for consolidating the presence of the Arabic language and culture in Germany and the European Union in general.”

Under the agreement, the two parties exchange experiences in the cultural and linguistic fields, and are concerned with publishing research projects on Arabic language and literature and issuing scientific reports on the status of the Arabic language in the areas of its use in Germany and Europe according to an implementation plan to be agreed upon. They also supervise the organization of events, activities, seminars and conferences in joint projects, especially translation, Arabic language and literature.

The agreement also stipulates the participation of Leipzig University in conferences, book fairs, and prizes organized by the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, and the two sides’ contribution to scientific exchange to serve each other’s strategy.

For his part, the Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies and Professor of Arabic Language and Translation Sciences, Professor Dr. Sebastian Maisel said: “We are pleased with this strategic partnership with the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, which is one of the most important institutions in the Arab region and the world in the field of Arabic language development. While this agreement is a continuation of the university and the center’s work to develop this language, we consider this signing the starting point for more qualitative cultural, linguistic and academic initiatives, and joint cooperation, which we hope will add a lot to this field.”

This agreement enables both parties to benefit from each other’s research and academic expertise and capabilities, and for the joint projects to be launched under this partnership to provide a fertile environment for the presence of the Arabic language among students and young researchers.
