The Egyptian authorities announced the occurrence of an earthquake in the eastern Mediterranean, the intensity of which exceeded six degrees, according to the Richter scale.

It was reported that residents of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, and other cities felt the earthquake at 05:35 GMT, today, Tuesday.

According to witnesses from Reuters and posts on social networking sites, the earthquake was felt by residents of Cairo, as well as residents of the cities of Alexandria, which overlooks the Mediterranean, and Assiut, in Upper Egypt.

Residents of those cities said that they felt their homes shaking due to the earthquake, while the authorities have not yet issued reports of injuries.

The Helwan Observatory, affiliated with the Egyptian National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, said that the stations of the National Seismic Network affiliated with the institute recorded today, Tuesday, an earthquake east of Crete, 390 km north of Alexandria, with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale at 7:32 and 29 seconds in the morning.

The latitude for that earthquake was 34.59 north, while the longitude was 28.59 east, with a depth of 31.56 km, Dr. Gad El-Qadi, head of the Egyptian National Institute for Astronomical Research confirmed to Sky News Arabia.

The judge said that the institute had received information indicating that the earthquake was felt, without causing any loss of life and property.

It should be noted that a week ago, specifically last Tuesday, the eastern Mediterranean region was subjected to an earthquake measuring 6.4 degrees on the Richter scale, with a depth of 25 kilometers. It was felt by residents of some areas in Egypt. No loss of property and lives was recorded either.

Last week’s earthquake, which occurred on October 12, 2021, brought back to Egyptians the memory of the worst earthquake that Egypt experienced on the same date in 1992, leaving hundreds dead and injured and a great deal of damage to real estate and property.
