The Sharjah Book Authority has announced the selection of Kuwaiti writer Taleb Al-Rifai, the cultural personality of the year, for the activities of the 40th session of the Sharjah International Book Fair, which will be held this year under the slogan (Here.. for you a book), from 3 to 13 November at the Expo Center. Sharjah.
Taleb Al-Rifai was chosen as the cultural personality of the year for the exhibition, in appreciation of his creative career in writing novels, short stories, literary criticism, teaching creative writing arts, and his role in renewal in Gulf literature, conveying the aesthetics of the place and the depth of the culture of its people, and building a bridge of communication between the Arab cultural movement and its Western counterpart during More than three decades running.
Talib Al-Rifai is a Kuwaiti novelist and short story writer. Among his most recent works is a novel entitled “The Kidnapping of the Beloved,” and the book “The Color of Tomorrow – The Vision of the Arab Intellectual Beyond Corona.” Small”, “The Dress”, and other works such as: “Theater in Kuwait: A Historical Vision”.
Al-Rifai won the State Prize in Literature in 2002 in Kuwait for his novel “The Smell of the Sea”.
Al-Rifai worked as Director of the Department of Culture and Arts at the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters in Kuwait, and as a director and advisor to Al-Funun newspaper between 2003 and 2008. In addition to his constant and abundant preoccupation with fiction writing, he has authored many literary and historical research, and is the president of the Al-Multaqa Prize for the Arabic short story.
On the selection of the cultural personality of the year for this year’s edition of the exhibition, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority, said: “We seek to keep the Sharjah International Book Fair as a platform for honoring the symbols of creativity in Arab and international culture from writers, thinkers and critics who have added to global libraries, enriching them.” Diversity and enriching it with authentic experiences that reveal the richness of the literary scene. Honoring enlightened minds and creative models is an annual tradition that has accompanied the Sharjah International Book Fair since its inception, embodying the visions of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, towards celebrating the symbols of literature and culture, and honoring their role in advancing the reality of Arab culture.
He added: “This year’s honor is a celebration of a literary name that has transcended its local and Gulf presence to the Arab cultural scene, the writer Taleb Al-Rifai, who was able to prove to new generations that betting on the word and beautiful creativity transfers the writer and artist’s experience to a wider world based on human and civilized common.”
The writer, Talib Al-Rifai, was born in 1958 and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Kuwait University in 1982 and a Master’s degree (MFA) in creative writing from Kingston University in London. He began literary writing during university studies in the mid-seventies, and some of his works have been translated into English, French and German.
