Russian champion Daniil Medvedev said in a statement on Friday that he has decided to withdraw from the Kremlin Cup next week in Moscow to focus on the rest of the season.
Medvedev, who beat Novak Djokovic in the US Open final at Flushing Meadows last month to claim his first Grand Slam title, was knocked out in the fourth round at Indian Wells this week after losing to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
The world number two said: The Kremlin Cup in Moscow was an opportunity to play in front of the Russian fans, I registered myself in the tournament and was hoping to play, but because of the busy schedule in 2021 I felt that I was not 100% physically ready.
He added, “It was a difficult decision, but I took it to complete the season and achieve good results.
U.S. Women’s Open champion Emma Raducano withdrew from the Kremlin Cup on Thursday.
