Sir Ferguson on his Ballon d’Or nominee: His records make him deserve it

The Ballon d’Or race continues this year, with intense competition, Karim Benzema, Lionel Messi, Jorginho and Robert Lewandowski are some of the names in the frame, but Cristiano Ronaldo makes a case of his own.

And Sir Alex Ferguson, the former coach of Manchester United, who is considered the godfather of Ronaldo, believes that Cristiano deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

The Portuguese legend scored a hat-trick this week, his 58th career career, and this year he has broken other records besides his quest for his sixth Ballon d’Or.

This treble – and its timing – may tip all the votes for Ronaldo, as happened in 2013 when the then-Real Madrid striker got a hat-trick against Sweden that helped him beat Messi and Franck Ribery in the vote.

“Cristiano deserves it, this year he broke the record after another,” Sir Alex Ferguson said in statements published by the Spanish newspaper “Marca” about Ronaldo’s eligibility to win the Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo, after his Portuguese team’s World Cup qualifier match against Luxembourg, said: “I always promised I would want more and more, it’s inside me, in my DNA, we must never be complacent, never slacken, and always try to reach as high as possible.”

His next mission is to win the award on November 29, joining him with seven La Liga titles, five Champions League titles, one European Championship, one Nations League, five Ballon d’Or awards, four Golden Boots, and two FIFA Beast titles.

Ronaldo became the all-time top scorer in the Champions League, as well as the highest international scorer of all time, in 2021, with the 36-year-old overtaking Pele and Joseph Bikan as the top scorer in football history.

Ronaldo is now just five goals away from over 800 in his career, and is also the only man to have been the top scorer in the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A.
