Africa’s electricity lights up Europe

On Thursday, Greece and Egypt signed an agreement to transfer electricity from Africa to Europe, the first of its kind in the Mediterranean.

The agreement paves the way for an undersea cable that will transport electricity generated from renewable energy in North Africa to Europe.

“This connection is beneficial for Greece, Egypt and the European Union,” said Greek Energy Minister Costas Skrekas, and that the project would contribute to building an energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, and enhance energy security in the region.

The agreement comes at a time when Greece, Cyprus and Israel intend to build an electrical link between Europe and Asia, the longest and deepest electricity cable crossing the Mediterranean, at an estimated cost of $900 million.

In turn, Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy in Egypt, said that the electrical connection between Egypt and Greece will create a well-connected network across the eastern Mediterranean, and that it will enhance the penetration of clean energy into the energy mix in the European Union.
