Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund – and representative of the group of Arab countries, including Lebanon to the Executive Board of the Fund – will start a visit to the Lebanese capital Beirut next week, as part of cooperation efforts between Lebanon and the Fund regarding the state’s plan for economic recovery.

The visit aims to discuss the priorities of senior Lebanese officials in the social, humanitarian, economic and financial fields within the recovery plan.


During the visit, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin is scheduled to meet with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Negotiating Committee with the International Monetary Fund HE Al-Shami.


He will also meet the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund, Minister of Finance, Dr. Youssef El-Khalil, Minister of Economy and Trade Amin Salam, and Minister of Energy Walid Fayyad. He will also meet at the beginning of his meetings with the Governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh.


Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin had confirmed in an interview with the Middle East News Agency last July that the existence of a government with full powers is a prerequisite for the start of negotiations between Lebanon and the IMF, stressing that reaching an agreement between the Lebanese state and the Fund means Lebanon obtaining financing, and it opens the door for it. In front of obtaining other financing from international bodies and institutions, it restores confidence in the Lebanese economy and its ability to move, and opens the way for investment, trade on a regular basis, and employment for the defaulters.

As for the financial issue, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister, His Excellency Al-Shami, made a preliminary presentation of the economic plan that Lebanon will submit to the International Monetary Fund, provided that the relevant ministerial committee will hold meetings in the coming days to finalize all the details, and the Prime Minister discussed with Minister of Finance Youssef Khalil the final stages. from the preparation of the budget for the year 2022.
