The Australian state of Victoria has recorded more than 2,000 daily cases of coronavirus for the first time since the start of the pandemic, with vaccination rates nearing their targets.

Today, Thursday, the state health authorities stated that 2,297 cases, all locally transmitted, were recorded during the past 24 hours, and thus the numbers jumped by more than 700 cases compared to the previous day, which is the highest number in one day for any state or region in Australia during the pandemic.

The state also recorded 11 deaths overnight.

This brings the total number of cases in the state to about 60,000 and the number of deaths to 945, including 125 deaths due to the outbreak of the mutated Delta strain of the highly contagious and rapidly spreading virus.

As of Wednesday, 61.5 percent of eligible Victorians had been fully vaccinated, and 86.7 percent had received a single dose. The state is expected to begin lifting restrictions on vaccinated people once 70 percent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated.
