The United States said that the talks in the first direct meeting between senior US officials and the Taliban since the movement regained power in Afghanistan in August were “frank and professional”, and that the American side stressed again that the Taliban’s judgment will depend on their actions, not just their words.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said the US delegation to the Doha talks at the weekend focused on security concerns, terrorism and safe passage for US citizens and other foreign and Afghan nationals, as well as on human rights.

He said the two sides also discussed “the United States’ provision of robust direct humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.

“The discussions were frank and professional, with the US delegation emphasizing that the Taliban will be judged by their actions, not just their words,” Price said in a statement.

He did not indicate whether any agreements had been reached.
