The Minister of Environment listened to Nigel Topping’s experience as a champion of climate action, the activities he has undertaken and the challenges he has faced so far to play his role, noting her aspiration to know the mechanisms for selecting the champion of climate action, his competencies and the activities entrusted to him to take into account when Egypt chooses the champions of climate action within the framework of its preparations To host next year’s climate conference COP27, noting that Egypt will have its own experience in choosing its champion for climate action.

Nigel Topping, champion of climate action for the COP26 climate conference, explained that this mission made him participate in many topics related to the issue of climate change, including raising ambition, financing, linking measures to address the effects of climate change and the business community, stimulating investment in climate action, mechanisms to attract the private sector, and encouraging youth and civil society to Adopting climate solutions, noting the need to make more efforts to confront the effects of climate change, create more frameworks of cooperation between all parties, and support both adaptation and mitigation measures.

Dr. Yasmine Fouad expressed her happiness with the results of the partnership between Egypt and the United Kingdom so far in the Alliance for Adaptation and Confronting the Effects of Climate Change, as they succeeded together in creating great momentum in the adaptation file and it became one of the priorities on the table of climate change discussions, adding that by providing more funding and measures Indeed, we will achieve great strides in this field, and we seek to work on that at the COP 26 climate conference and to complete it with Egypt hosting the COP 27 conference.

The Minister of Environment reviewed some Egyptian efforts to confront the effects of climate change, including the Prime Minister’s presidency of the National Council on Climate Change, with the membership of all relevant ministries and sectors, and work on the national strategy for climate change and the national strategy for adaptation.

The Climate Action Champion expressed his hope that COP 26 would include a number of effective platforms to discuss climate finance, the participation of the private sector, youth and civil society, and innovative response measures.

The Minister of Environment pointed out that the issues related to the issue of climate change are many and require a real dialogue between all parties, including the link between climate change and biodiversity, which was one of the important topics that Egypt was keen to highlight during its presidency of the Conference on Biological Diversity COP 14, and Egypt will be keen if it hosts it The climate conference should continue highlighting it, as a framework for the biodiversity roadmap for post-2020 has been prepared and will be approved next year, explaining that addressing the impact of climate change on biodiversity loss and its impact on the business community and local communities is an important topic.

The British Climate Action Champion praised Egypt’s efforts during its presidency of the Convention on Biological Diversity COP 14 and the link between biodiversity and climate change, stressing the importance of proceeding with the three Rio conventions (biodiversity, climate change, desertification) in one track. For his part, the British ambassador discussed with the Minister of Environment Egypt’s plans to participate in the activities of the COP 26 climate conference in Glasgow, and its preparations to host the next COP27 conference, as Egypt is a major partner of the United Kingdom in the issue of climate change, and welcomed Britain’s participation in Egypt with its experience in choosing the champion of climate action in terms of criteria. and mechanisms, stressing that Egypt will present its own experience in choosing its champion for climate action.

The Minister of Environment referred to what President Sisi stressed at the United Nations General Assembly meeting about the priority of financing and adaptation as topics for discussion in the upcoming two climate conferences, stressing that it is an urgent issue for developing countries, especially the African continent, so Egypt will complete its efforts to support that issue, which it has highlighted since its leadership. The African continent in the climate negotiations and the Paris Agreement, and the two African initiatives for adaptation and renewable energy. The African initiative for renewable energy has been worked on, and Egypt has had a success story in expanding renewable energy, which we will present during the side event that Egypt will organize at COP26 on green transformation and renewable energy. The African Initiative for Adaptation, which aims to enable African countries to access the financing necessary to carry out adaptation measures, and work to reach equal proportions of financing for both adaptation and mitigation, all of these and other topics that Egypt will highlight during the climate conference.
