General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, received in Abu Dhabi the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, who visited the country recently, in the context of keenness to enhance mutual participation and cooperation in issues Bilateral as well as regional and global, as the UAE is an important partner of the European Union.
Borrell also met with Shakhbut bin Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of State.
Josep Borrell said during the visit: “The UAE is an important partner in the Gulf region, and we have a common interest in maintaining the security and stability of this region and our common neighbourhood. Therefore, the European Union would like to continue our regular political dialogue on the challenges we face in the region, in addition to continuing our regular dialogue on human rights. “
Borrell added: “The election of the United Arab Emirates as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the next two years will provide broader opportunities to strengthen our joint efforts in dealing with regional challenges.”
Borrell also welcomed the country’s constructive policy, particularly on Afghanistan, and briefed Emirati officials on his efforts as coordinator of the Iran nuclear deal.
The talks provided an opportunity to raise the issue of climate change before the 26th Climate Action Conference at the end of this month, as well as future efforts, as the UAE is a pioneer in taking measures against climate change among the countries of the region. The European Union and the UAE have similar priorities of green transformation, digital transformation and the development of renewable energies, which paves the way for additional possibilities to enhance bilateral trade and investment.
The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and European Security Policy affirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting the economic diversification of the UAE, through global events such as the Expo 2020 Dubai, which he visited, and met there His Excellency Reem Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of the Expo, where the two parties discussed the possibilities of Deepening cooperation between the European Union and the UAE in the areas of sustainability, diversification and modernization, in addition to building bridges between different cultures around the world with the aim of enhancing mutual understanding within the international community.
During his visit to the national pavilions of Slovenia and Spain at Expo 2020, Josep Borrell said: “It is important to strengthen cooperation between the international community, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, and in this sense, the European Union participates in organizing many events at Expo to introduce the European approach to sustainability, mobility and innovation. We look forward to collaborating with all participants in this global platform.”
While in the UAE, the High Representative participated in the 2021 World Policy Conference as one of the keynote speakers where he reviewed EU policies related to Afghanistan, the southern neighbourhood, European defense and strategic independence.
