An explosion outside a mosque in the Afghan capital killed “a number of civilians” on Sunday, a Taliban spokesman said.
Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter: “An explosion in the afternoon targeted a gathering of civilians near the entrance to the (Eid Kah) mosque in Kabul, killing a number of them,” without providing additional details.
A prayer was held in the mosque on Sunday afternoon for Mujahid’s mother, who died last week, according to what the spokesman said on social media on Saturday, as he confirmed that “all people and friends are invited to attend.”
“I heard an explosion near the (Eid Kah) mosque, followed by shooting,” said Ahmed Allah, who works in a shop nearby.
He added: “Before the explosion, the Taliban blocked the way to pray for the mother of Zabihullah Mujahid in the Eid Kah mosque.”
The sound of an explosion and gunfire was heard as ambulances were seen rushing towards the emergency hospital in Kabul.
