Cyprus is in advanced negotiations with Israel for the purchase of the “Iron Dome” defense system, the Cypriot television channel Sigma reported last weekend.
According to the report, the version that the Cypriots are interested in purchasing is the same as or close to a system that is successfully operated by Israel, especially in the face of launches from the Gaza Strip, and that the Ministry of Defense is expected to apply for financing the deal within the defense budget. The channel noted that if the deal goes through, Cyprus “will get its hands on an excellent defensive weapon”.
The report also noted that an upgrade of the naval base near the town of Marie in the south of the island, between Larnaca and Limassol, is expected in the context of the huge deal signed last week between Greece and France for the purchase of three advanced frigates. Military sources told Sigma that a Greek or French frigate moored at the base could provide coverage of airspace to the shores of Turkey.
