The US military announced Friday that the prominent leader of Al-Qaeda who was killed in an air strike in the Idlib region in northwest Syria on September 20 was Salim Abu Ahmed.

A drone strike targeted a car on the road leading from Idlib to Binnish in the northeast of the governorate center, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which reported the killing of leaders “in a faction close to al-Qaeda.”

The US military confirmed at the time that it had killed an al-Qaeda leader, without revealing his identity.

US Central Command spokesman John Rigsby said in a statement Friday that Salim Abu Ahmed “was responsible for planning, financing, and approving al-Qaeda’s attacks across the region.”

“There are no indications of civilian casualties as a result of the strike,” the statement added.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly al-Nusra) and less influential opposition factions control half of Idlib and its surroundings. The area is home to three million people, nearly half of whom are internally displaced.

These factions are subjected to frequent air strikes by the Syrian regime and its ally Russia, as well as the international coalition led by the United States.
