Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said defender Phil Jones will return to the squad against West Ham United in the League Cup on Wednesday, after a 20-month absence through injury.
Jones has not played for United since scoring during the FA Cup win over Tremere Rovers in January 2020, due to a serious knee injury, and underwent surgery last summer.
“I am happy for Phil,” Solskjaer told the club’s website. He’s completed two 90-minute matches for the U-23 team, played a few minutes behind closed doors and never had a knee problem. He works very hard.”
He added, “He will be in the squad. It’s a beautiful day for him and us and it’s something he deserves. I know the challenges he faced psychologically and thinking that he would never play again or maybe not walk and not play with the kids in the park.”
Former England defender Jones made more than 200 appearances for United in all competitions.
