The United States, the United Kingdom and Australia have established a trilateral security partnership aimed at countering China, which will include helping Australia build nuclear-powered submarines, according to the British newspaper, The Guardian.
The newspaper added in a report: “The initiative, called Aukus, was jointly announced by US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister, and Australian Scott Morrison… They presented it as the decisive step in an old alliance.” .
The announcement of the new tripartite security treaty, dubbed “Ocos”, came during a virtual summit hosted by Biden at the White House, in which British Prime Minister Johnson and his Australian counterpart, Morrison, participated via video.
The Guardian quoted Morrison as saying: “Teams from the three countries will develop a plan over the next 18 months to assemble Australia’s new nuclear-powered submarine fleet, which will be built in Adelaide. The project will make Australia the seventh country in the world to have nuclear-powered submarines.”
None of the three leaders explicitly mentioned China in their speech, but there was no doubt that the initiative was a response to China’s expansionist campaign in the South China Sea and its growing hostility toward Taiwan.
