The Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo announced that the 80-year-old Brazilian football legend Pele underwent surgery due to a colon tumor, adding that he was “recovering” in an intensive care unit.
The hospital, where Bleh was admitted on August 31, said that the tumor was discovered during routine cardiovascular and laboratory tests, and the materials were sent for analysis.
The three-time world champion wrote on his Instagram account: “Thank God, I feel good. Fortunately, I am used to celebrating great victories by your side. I will play this new match with a smile and a lot of optimism.” The hospital said in a statement that Pele was discharged from intensive care on Tuesday. .
And many local media announced that Pele was admitted to hospital in Sao Paulo six days ago, due to health problems that appeared during routine examinations.
The SJ1E news website stated that Pele had been admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital since August 31.
On that day, the three-time world champion posted a message on social media, in which he said he was “in good health” and denied rumors that he had lost consciousness.
He said in his blog on August 31, “I went to the hospital for routine tests that I could not do before due to the epidemic,” without mentioning that he remained in the hospital.
Several Brazilian media reported that “health problems” were discovered during these examinations, which prompted the doctors to keep him in hospital.
“As soon as the doctors have finished all the tests, we will issue a statement,” one of Pele’s escorts said.
Pele’s health, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has deteriorated in recent years, and he has been hospitalized several times, the last of which was in April 2019 in Paris, due to an acute urinary tract infection, and upon his return to Brazil, kidney stones were removed.
Pele suffered in November 2014 from an acute urinary tract infection, which forced him to enter the intensive care room and underwent dialysis, amid great concern around the world about the possibility of the death of the player, who is one of the most prominent in history.
Pele has only had one kidney since he was a player, and a rib fracture during a match damaged his right kidney, which was eventually removed.
In 2016, Pele was scheduled to light the torch at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but he had to miss the party due to health reasons as well.
He also suffers from thigh problems, and in February 2020, Pele reassured his fans about his mental health, after his son Edinho said he was “isolated” and suffers from “a certain type of depression”.
Pele, the only player in history to win the World Cup three times (1958, 1962 and 1970), scored 1281 goals in 1363 games, including 77 goals in 92 games for the Seleção shirt, and was chosen in 1999 by the International Olympic Committee as one of the best Athletes of the twentieth century, and a year later as the best player of the same century by the International Football Association “FIFA”, and many consider him the best football player of all time.
