Patients who take cholesterol medications are less likely to die from “Corona”
A scientific study has found that millions of people who take cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) may be less likely to die from the Corona virus.
Statins are among the most popular drugs in the world. It can also reduce inflammation in the blood vessels, which has raised questions about whether it can help patients with the Corona virus, according to the Guardian newspaper.
A large study published in PLOS Medicine now indicates that statins are associated with a small reduction in the risk of death from Covid-19. However, experts urged caution about the findings, stressing that this does not prove that statins can actually reduce death rates.
The research looked at the relationship between medications and the death rate of “Corona”. Using data from Swedish registries, Karolinska Institutet followed 963,876 Stockholmers over the age of 45 between March and November 2020.
The results were based on analyzes of data on the participants’ prescribed medications and health care and from the registry of causes of death. Information was analyzed in relation to factors such as diagnoses of medical conditions.
“Overall, our results support the continued use of statins for conditions such as cardiovascular disease and high levels of blood lipids in line with current recommendations during a pandemic,” said study co-author Victor Alqvist, of the Department of Global Public Health at the Karolinska Institutet. Corona)”.
Tim Chico, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Consultant Cardiology at the University of Sheffield, who was not involved in the study, said it was not yet clear why these drugs might help Corona patients.
He said, “(Corona) can cause severe lung infections, but it also causes inflammation in the blood vessels… Because statins reduce inflammation in the blood vessels, there has been a lot of controversy about whether they will improve outcomes in patients with the virus.” .
“This study does not definitively prove that statins prevent death related to corona, but it does provide some evidence, as it is noted that patients who take statins were less likely to die than others,” Chico added.
